Application of radio frequency identification (RFID) in feeding and management system and data collection
Through the equipment of RFID weight-bridge, automatic record feeding crib and the ultra high frequency of RFID tags, the amount of ration intake could be transmitted to the server in the lab every five minutes. Feed conversion rate then could be calculated by their body weight change and their feed intake weekly.
For the establishment of breeding data bank in dairy goats, the Lacorder®, an automatic milk measuring and sampling device with the written distinctive software, was used to collect data of total milk yield, milking speed, the electric conductivity of milk and the milking time. The correlations among the parameters were investigated. The amount of milk was relatively high with the maximal milk flow rate in one minute (r = 0.64, P < 0.0001), followed by the duration of total milking (r = 0.56, P < 0.0001), the maximal milk temperature (r = 0.54, P < 0.0001) and the highest milk flow within 22 seconds (r = 0.43, P < 0.0001). These portable devices can be used to collect milking data for dairy farmers to monitor and adjust their feeding and management system. In addition, RFID was used to combine goat-handling corral for the automation of animal weighing. With this weighing system, 22.4% of weighing time was saved and animals were free of stress. The cost of labor and the risk of animal handling were reduced as well.
