Introduction
Hualien Animal Propagation Station (HAPS) is located at Ji-an township, Hualien county in the east of Taiwan. It was occupied a total the 4820 ares of land. The goal of HAPS is assisting farmers to create more profits from their productions. Therefore, HAPS was dedicated to enhance the techniques of animal husbandry in Hualien area. HAPS not only promoted the outstanding breed of Taiwan buffaloes and Taiwan black goats to local farmers, but also provided the information to farmers for preventing or eliminating the Animal waste pollution problems. Recent years, HAPS try to apply biotechnology and communication technology in the advanced animal breeding and husbandry. By polymerase chain reaction and DNA sequencing techniques, the complex genetic information can be analyzed from individuals. This method can be highly increased the efficiency of animal breeding. In addition, the RFID techniques were used to manage Taiwan buffalo herds or free-range chickens precisely and easily. Ultimately, we very welcome to share our experiences and techniques with local farmers and offer the good quality of breeding animal and excellent animal products in Hualien area.
History
Hualien harbor stallion station was the forerunner of Hualien Animal Propagation Station (HAPS). It was established in 1939 and was under the jurisdiction of Taiwan governor-general, on the time of Taiwan under Japanese rule. After Taiwan under the jurisdiction of Republic of China at end of world war two, HAPS was renamed as Taiwan province governor Hualien harbor stallion station. Followed Taiwan government reformed several times within half century, HAPS was renamed again in 1946, 1948, 1952, 1973, 1976 and 1999. Finally, HAPS was belonged to Livestock Research Institute, which was under the jurisdiction of Council of Agriculture Executive Yuan from 1999 till now.

Introduction of local industry
Hualien county is located at the east of Taiwan. The major business in this area is agriculture. Hualien local agricultural products are hard to compete to those from the west area of Taiwan duo to transportation difficulty. Therefore, the province of Hualien county government was promoting toxic-free agricultural products in this area. With the assistance from the Hualien county government, local farmers in Hualien devoted to produce the toxic-free agri-products. Up to now, Hualien county is famous with the toxic-free agricultural products. Moreover, farmers can get higher profits from their products and consumers can have more natural or healthy foods from this beautiful backyard garden of Taiwan.
Techniques promotion
1960-1963 Introduced Yorkshire, Landrance and Duroc breeds and propagating two breed crossed gilts for local farms. 1977 Set up the pig AI station and provided pig AI services for Hualien and Taitung. 1987 Established Taiwan black goat preservation center. 1987 Established national Taiwan buffalo conservation herds. 1988-1989 1600 ares of grassland were planted with Pangola grass for hay productions. 1989 Obtained two white buffaloes from COA, and began to white buffalo conservation. 1998 Nubian goat crossed with Taiwan black goat for the new breed of Ji-an goat. 2007 Introduced game chickens and laying hens for researching and developing the local chicken business in Hualien. 2007 Produced the organic forage for organic agriculture. 2008 Established free-range laying hens production system, and produced toxic-free eggs. 2009 Organic ranch certified. 2010 Taiwan buffalo designation passed.
