The output value of the livestock industry in 2013 was NT$150.0 billions accounting for 31.16% of the total agricultural production value which was equivalent to NT$481.4 billions. Therefore, getting the advice of the experts and carrying on of enterprises are the prerequisite of the survival to the livestock industry. On the other hand, the service sector of the production value account for 69.14% of the gross domestic product (GDP) in 2013, leading to that of the industry (29.10%) and the agriculture (1.68%). This means that the economic structure in Taiwan was mainly based on the software and knowledge service types. Due to the high density in population and adverse environment for production, the development of livestock industry is restricted. In view of the experiences of the developed countries, Taiwan has also been changing its production value to human living and the ecology. Busy life, working pressure and increasing income made the life style toward professional labor sharing and was engaged in the entertainments and traveling. Eating is not mean for repletion, but for good health, safety, convenience, taste and culture. Taiwan has entered WTO. This is implied that agricultural products influenced by cost and quality will become more competitive. Hygiene and disease prevention, food safety and quality control are probably bound to an alternative trading barriers. A new era of the competition including food processing, commercial management, and reunion of the strategy will be coming and it is the way to increase the production value. The breakthrough of the born of cloned sheep, Dolly, announced by the Roslin Institute in 1997 had surprisingly made a tremendous progress in biotechnology in the world. This achievement revealed that biotechnology was not only for the theory but also for unexpected possibilities. The biotechnology like artificial reproduction, somatic cell cloning, transgenic animals, genomics, genetic markers and bioinformatics will probably be the key to success of future animal industry. Gathering of resources, chance and intellectual property to advanced technology showed that the industry was existed in and unsteady, full of chance and challenge situation. The trend was unavoidable and we should set up accurate goals after consideration. We hope to provide good information for those interested in using livestock technologies for increasing Taiwan livestock industry competitive ability and improving the level of human living quality.
